Why Hospitals Are Moving Away from Vendor Management Systems
Key Insights and take aways from Recent Conference and Physician Leadership Conversations:
While there are some large health systems that continue to utilize vendor management systems (usually brought on from hospital administration), it has become abundantly clear that many larger health systems are consistently expressing interest in moving away from the vendor management system model.
Key reasons for wanting to revert back to direct model:
Lack of trust in the MSP partners (not vendor neutral)
Overspending / Discrepancies in invoices / Paying more, not less annually
Lack of ability to communicate with vendors
Taking up to much of their time (not a time saver like promised)
Many large health systems have effective ways of running their own locum management processes. Some keys to success are:
Having a dedicated locum tenens contact in-house
Treating locum agencies like they are part of the team
Having locum agencies conduct site visits
Holding locum agencies accountable for billing/invoicing reports as often as requested
Comment : “During these recent conference and many times since, I have given numerous presentations on Why Vendor Management Systems May Not Be the Answer That They Promise to Be, said Evan – Chief Sales Office of Alumni Staffing. “I think there are use cases for those specific VMS systems, especially when it comes to nursing and other industries, but Locum Tenens is such a complex industry that Health Systems are beginning to realize that having an internal process may be more effective, transparent and cost effective. This is evidenced by all the requests for these presentations and subsequent transitions away from those models. ”
