National Locum Tenens Week: Celebrating the Providers Who Keep Healthcare Moving
/Every day, across hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the country, physicians are stepping into new environments, joining new teams, and caring for patients who need them.
They may be covering for a physician on leave, helping a hospital through a lengthy permanent search, supporting an overwhelmed department, or traveling to a community experiencing a physician shortage.
Whatever brings them there, their purpose is the same: show up, step in, and provide exceptional patient care.
More Than Filling an Open Shift
It's easy to think about locum tenens in terms of schedules: there's an open shift, and a physician fills it. But their impact goes much further. An uncovered schedule can increase workloads for permanent physicians, make PTO difficult to accommodate, limit patient access, and place additional pressure on an already busy clinical team.
Locum tenens physicians provide much-needed flexibility during those moments. They help healthcare organizations maintain patient access, support permanent teams, and continue delivering care through vacancies, leaves of absence, seasonal demand, and unexpected coverage gaps.
Sometimes, they're the reason another physician can finally take that much-needed vacation or spend a weekend at home with their family.
Stepping Into Something New
There's another part of locum tenens that deserves recognition: the ability to walk into the unknown.
New hospital. New colleagues. New workflows. New systems. New patients. Sometimes an entirely new city.
And through all of that change, these physicians are expected to do what they do best: provide excellent patient care.
That requires adaptability, confidence, communication, and a willingness to embrace new challenges.
Our locum physicians demonstrate those qualities every day.
To Our Locum Tenens Providers: Thank You

They care for patients. They support healthcare teams. They bring their expertise into communities that need it.
